Outpost – fashion notes from the edge. Homage to tradition – natural fibres, traditional designs and motifs, the comfort of the familiar – but crafted in a new context, twisted and re-invented to fit a new paradigm. Loved yet wild, familiar yet renewed, tradition but with intensity - order fractured and re-aligned. The outpost demands invention – what was once decorative becomes utilitarian, what was purposeful assumes a new purpose.
In an iterative process of design and redesign, starting with tradition and moving to the frontier, the collection is a reflection of a love of the craft of fashion, handmade techniques, natural fibres and the feeling of fabrics against the skin. Clothes to be felt, loved, worn and worn out.
The collection typifies the out of place, mis-appropriated sense of the outpost using contrasting knitting techniques. The intricate patterns of the machine knitted Fair Isle beside rich sculptured hand knitting speaks of a place linked to tradition by a thread but isolated, left to adapt, evolve and survive.
“…. from a wild, weird clime, that lieth sublime, out of space – out of time.” (Edgar Alan Poe. Dreamland. 1844)
